Why are my important emails going to the Promotions tab?
There can be some reasons behind this problem. Gmail’s algorithm scans each new email based on a number of factors to decide which tab to place the email in. If you don’t do this, Google may assume that since you’re not opening these emails, they’re promotional and should be automatically classified under your Promotions tab. You can also use the star or important marker in Gmail to mark email as important.
2. Create a Filter
Another way is to add a filter for the sender’s email address. This ensures that all the emails you don’t want to skip will automatically be moved from your Promotions tab to your Primary tab.
Double-check the sender’s address to be sure, and click the Create Filter button. If you don’t see the sender’s address in the From field, simply copy the address from the email you received from them and paste it here.
Once you create this filter, every email sent from this exact address will automatically be forwarded to your primary tab. You can edit your filters later if you need to adjust your settings.
3. Add email to your contacts
If a company or person you know is sending emails to your inbox but they keep ending up in the Promotions tab, add them to your contact list so that all future emails are sent to your primary tab.
Once you click on the icon, it will add that sender’s address to your personal contacts, and you will see a popup confirming the action at the bottom of your screen.
If you decide that you want to remove the sender from your contacts in the future, you can always manage these contacts in Gmail later.
4. Use the “No Promotion” button
On the left side of your screen in your email inbox, you’ll see Default and Custom sections for all of your email. Learning the different terms and areas of your Gmail inbox will make it easier in the future to navigate and find what you’re looking for.
This will prevent any emails from this sender from ending up in your Promotions tab. You won’t see the button in your regular Promotions tab, so you’ll need to navigate to this specific section of your inbox to see this option.
You’ll notice that this section contains all current emails in your Promotions tab, but it also includes all emails sent to your Promotions tab over time. This is a great chance to delete old messages you no longer need and clear some space in your inbox.
5. Disable Your Promotions Tab
If none of the above options work, you can disable your Promotions tab completely. This solution is a last resort, as disabling a specific tab will move all promotional emails to your primary tab.
However, this option will allow you to filter your messages without relying on Google to do all the work for you.
You can now check your inbox and double-check that the Promotions tab has been disabled. All of your emails from Promotions should go directly into your primary tab, and it’s up to you how you organize your Gmail inbox.
If you decide that filtering messages all by yourself is too much, you can always navigate back to this area of your settings to manage your tabs.
